Breakaway Dog Collars: Their Purpose and Uses

July 7, 2020 By erica

Many dog collars are designed to stay put. Most have belt buckles that will allow you to adjust the size of your collar using holes in the collar. If your dog easily loses their collar or seems to be a mastermind at escaping from their collar, these types of dog collars are a great option. Breakaway dog collars, on the other hand, can save your dog’s life. There are many unfortunate circumstances where a dog could choke to death. A buckle collar is not only going to stay on your dog’s neck, but it will also prove to be difficult to unlatch when attempting to save your dog. A breakaway collar can easily prevent choking.

Dog Collar Disasters

Each year, thousands of dogs are killed or injured by their collar. Any collars that are not breakaway dog collars can pose a threat to your dog for many reasons. In many cases, a dog will ensnare their collar on a fence, crate, kennel, bush, or tree. In other cases, a dog could get another dog’s collar trapped in their jaw. This would cause most dogs to struggle and panic, choking the other dog. While a dog tag usually provides a surefire way of your dog being identified to others, sometimes these tags can also get caught on objects, such as a grate.

Puppies are especially at risk of collar-related death due to their fragility. It is well known that puppies are curious (and sometimes rascally). Due to its size, a puppy could easily get their collar snagged on a vent or in between deck boards. If yanked on by a playful adult dog, the collar on a puppy could cause it some serious damage. Many puppy owners crate-train their puppy. Whether a dog is young or grown, it is very easy for their collars to become trapped on their crate.

This information should make any dog owner nervous to leave their dog or puppy at home. Unfortunately, we cannot spend all day with our four-legged friend. At some point or another, we must go to work or leave the house for groceries. Luckily, there is an easy solution to any worries you may have. Breakaway dog collars are designed to protect dogs and puppies from any collar-related injuries or deaths.

What Are Breakaway Dog Collars?

Buckle collars are extremely difficult to remove, especially if a dog is struggling. Breakaway dog collars will auto-release if an object is caught on the collar. You might wonder what would happen when you place your dog with a breakaway collar on a leash with the assistance of an override feature. Most breakaway collars will not break loose from leashes. If you want a breakaway collar that does not automatically release, you can rely on the quick-release fastener that is simple and quick to remove when needed. All you need to do is squeeze the two tabs on either side of the buckle. Different premium dog collars may also include customizations to allow the quick release of a dog.
